Brief biographical notes

Born in Trebic, Czech Republic in 1930, after studying Art in Brno and then Prague from 1948 to 1958, Franta escaped to the West and settled in Nice.
 
Widely travelled in search of inspiration, this great expressionist artist has repeatedly earned critical international acclaim for his remarkable paintings and sculptures which draw on the direct events of the 20th century, featuring suffering, bleeding flesh and cadavers but as a platform for renewal, and in which the anguish of birth confronts and supercedes death and where the deserted African landscapes Franta discovered in the 1980s swallow up and erase curious man-made structures.
 
His figurative wash and indian ink drawings and paintings of the Masai, so much at one with their habitat; naked, male and female, squatting, reflecting, talking, or embracing are stunningly beautiful in their simplicity, their dusty skin tones  reflecting the grey or ocre soil whence they seem to come and to which they are destined to return.
 
In Spring 2009 , the City of Prague is honouring with a major Retrospective this extraordinary artist, subject already of over one hundred solo exhibitions across Europe, the USA and Japan and represented in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide.
