Herman Krikhaar at the Beddington Fineart Gallery
Surprisingly, the artist Herman Krikhaar (born in 1930, Netherlands), who has been coming to and working regularly in the Var since 1973, has had few exhibitions in the region. The show that Guy and Michèle Beddington are organising this summer in Bargemon will therefore be a rare opportunity to see the work of this strong expressionist painter.
Though Krikhaar started painting at the tender age of ten, his adventurous life in the art world, as a major collector of modern art and renowned gallery owner in Amsterdam for 25 years (1963-1988), did not interfere with the need to express himself.
On the contrary, the sharply trained eye with which he appraised and valued art, does not differ much from the look with which he scrutinises his own work.
During long reclusive summers in the Var, Herman painted with energetic dedication to what ultimately has become an extensive oeuvre. As his work has spanned various distinctive periods and continues to evolve, this feature also will mark the exhibition at the Beddington Gallery, in which paintings and drawings drawn from the nineties of the last century up to today will be on display. The most remarkable change is that lately he has replaced his previously strongly-outlined voluminous masses by an almost weightless and light-hearted approach.
Krikhaar’s drawings, at the heart of his creativity, have always demonstrated this agility and humour, glossing over the hardship of life, just a layer underneath.
Inspired by chance, he continues to paint as he lives … intuitively and audaciously.

Il étonnant que l’artiste Herman Krikhaar (né en 1930 au Pays-Bas) qui vient et travaille régulièrement dans le Var depuis 1973, ait eu si peu d’expositions dans la région. L’expostion que Guy et Michèle Beddington organisent à Bargemon cet eté, sera donc une rare oppurtunité de voir le travail de ce puissant peintre expressioniste.
Bien que Krikhaar ait commenceé à peindre au jeune âge de 10 ans, sa vie pleine d’aventures dans le monde de l’art comme collectionneur majeur d’art moderne et grand galeriste à Amsterdam pendant 25 ans, n’empêcha pas son désir de s’exprimer.
Au contraire l’oeil vif avec lequel il fait l’éloge et évalue l’art n’est pas différent du regard qu’il porte sur son propre travail.
Pendant de longs étés solitaires dans le Var, Herman Krikhaar se consacre avec énergie à son oeuvre maintenant colossale.
L’exposition à la Galerie Beddington marquera comment son travail a traversé différentes périodes distinctives tout en continuant à évoluer, peintures et dessins des années 90 jusqu’à nos jours, seront aux cimaises.
Le plus remarquable changement est que dernièrement il a remplacé ses masses volumineuses aux contours bien définies par une approche légère et presque sans pesanteur. En apesanteur ?
Les dessins de Krikhaar au coeur de sa création ont toujours souligné son agilité et son humour glissant sur les épreuves de la vie, juste une couche en-dessous.
Inspiré par la chance, il continue à peindre comme il vit, instinctivement et audacieusement .
